We provide emotional and practical support to individuals and families affected by HIV across Hampshire (including Southampton and Portsmouth) and South West Surrey, irrespective of gender, age, ability, sexuality, colour, race, ethic or national origin, belief (or non-belief), family circumstances or how HIV was acquired. We also work to reduce discrimination by providing up to date information and advice to all in the community, to help reduce further the infection of HIV and drive out discrimination.
The History of Positive Action
The organisation was originally a telephone help-line providing information to the local community in the early 90’s.
The name ‘Positive Action’ and the Constitution were adopted and the charity was registered in 1995 when, with the assistance of the local health authorities, independent premises were leased in Farnborough. This move enabled the volunteers to start providing emotional and practical support services directly to individuals.
In 1998 additional funding from Surrey and Hampshire County Councils enabled Positive Action to relocate to new premises in Aldershot and to establish a dedicated centre for people affected by HIV. The Aldershot Centre is one of two centres, from which our core services are delivered and managed.
The other centre is located in Southampton and was acquired as part of the deal when Ribbons approached Positive Action and requested that we take them over, merging our activities, enabling us to deliver an enhanced and broader service to a wider community and maximising our shared resources.
Positive Action is supported by a team of voluntary and paid workers, other experts and professionals.
Funding for our services is provided through statutory bodies – health and social care – and by other grant making organisations.
Employment Opportunities
We are not currently recruiting for the paid staff team at Positive Action but we are looking for volunteers to support our work.
