Telling Friends, Family and others

It is up to you who you decide to tell, and it can often be a difficult decision. You are under no obligation to tell anyone until you are ready to do so and there is no need in the UK to tell employers or authorities such information.

Often telling a sexual partner is the most difficult thing to do; if you tell them, you need to be prepared that they may not understand what this means or they may reject you, although if you don't tell them right away, they may become confused and angry if you do decide to tell them later. It is important to remember that being HIV positive does not stop you having a meaningful and fulfilling sex life.

If you decide to tell others, it is wise to think the decision through carefully before you do so, you may find it helpful to talk to someone about this first. Positive Action can help with this or the link below will provide more information.
